Friendsのワンシーンからリスニングのトレーニングをしてみましょう。

海外ドラマFriendsで英語リスニング

今回の聴き取る箇所は少なめです。全部で5か所。

※英語スクリプトの下に答えがあります。

答えを見る前に、じっくりと聞いて粘りましょう。粘れるところまで粘ったら、答えをみましょう。終わった後も、スクリプト全体を見ながら、再度英語を聞いて確認することも重要ですよ。

Ross: Emily!
Emily: Oh my God! What are you doing here?
Ross: I just, I had to see you one more time before you took off.
Emily: You are so sweet.
Ross: That's, that's, that's a big candy bar. I had the most amazing time with you.
Emily: Me too.
Ticket Agent: This is the final boarding call for Flight 009.
Emily: Well, that's me. Here, have this. I'm only allowed one piece of carry-on anyway.
Ross: Wait, uh, listen. I have to tell you something. Umm, I've been thinking, __①__. Okay? I think I love you.
Emily: Oh. Thank you.
Ross: It's no problem.

Ross: Hello?
Emily: Ross.
Ross: Emily, hi! Uh, how was your flight?
Emily: It was dreadful. __②__ when you said those wonderful things.
Ross: No, no, that's all right. Umm, __③__.
Emily: Ross, umm, there's something that I've got to tell you, __④__.
Ross: Does that mean the same thing in England as it does in America?

Chandler: Are we in London?
Monica: What are you doing here? You can't be here!
Emily: I've, uh, I've come to talk to Ross.
Emily: What?
Joey: Nothing. No, nothing.
Emily: I was gonna call him, but..
Monica: Oh, __⑤__! I knew it! I was right! I'm right, right?
Emily: I'd really rather talk to him.
Emily: I've been to his apartment and he's not there, and uh, I need to talk to him, so do you have any idea where he is?

(Ross is sitting outside Emily's apartment in London.)
Emily: Ross, are you there? Ross, I don't know if you can hear this, but I'm gonna talk anyway, uh, I'm in the States with your sister and your friends and it's all over with Colin. I came here to tell you that, to tell you ..
Yes, Joey you can have all the chocolate you want, just take it! Uh, I came here to tell you that I love you.
Ross: I love you too! I'm gonna call you right now from the phone booth! You can't hear me.
Emily: I wish I could know if you'd heard any of that. I suppose I've just either told you that I love you or I've given my neighbours a good laugh.
Mrs. Newman, if you're listening, bugger off! This is none of your business. I suppose there's not much chance you did hear that, and there's the call waiting so, I should go. Oh well. Hello.
Ross: Hi.
Emily: Ross, I love you!
Ross: Thank you.

今回の映像で、EmilyがRossに向かって電話で、

There's someone else.
他に（好きな人が）いるの。

それに対し、Rossは

Does that mean the same thing in England as it does in America?
それって、イギリスでも、アメリカと同じような意味なのかな。

と冗談で聞いていましたね。

ここで大事なことは2つです。

1) sameには必ずtheが前につく
2) sameのうしろには必ずasが来る

この2つはsameの重要ルールです。

ちなみに、"does"は"means"を指しています。

あとがき

今回は、Friends Season4 Episode17 "The One with the Free Porn" からです。

Friendsは他のドラマと比べても、聞き取りやすいセリフ、滑舌のいい役者さんがほとんどなので、英語学習者には打ってつけの教材です。

しかも、Friendsの場合は、前後の多少のつながりはありますが、毎回完結したストーリーなのでどの回から見ても楽しめます。これが飽きずに長年楽しめる大きな要因だと思います。

書店で買って来る教材も悪くはありませんが、英語を早く上達させたいのであれば、絶対にこうした生の英語を使うべき。入ってくる情報量が断然多いからです。

言葉の学習だけでなく、

ドラマを観ているだけで、これだけのことを学べるわけです。一石二鳥どころか何鳥かわからないくらいメリットだらけです。
