知っておきたい Just like that の独特の意味と使い方【Friendsより】

今回も、Friendsのワンシーンからリスニングです。初めての方もぜひリスニングにトライしてみてください。

知っておくと便利なフレーズや単語が、今回もかなり入ってます。日常英会話で頻出のセリフもあるので、リスニングだけでなく是非スピーキング練習にも活用してください。

海外ドラマFriendsで英語リスニング

今回の聴き取る箇所は10か所。

※英語スクリプトの下に答えがあります。

答えを見る前に、じっくりと聞いて粘りましょう。粘れるところまで粘ったら、答えをみましょう。終わった後も、スクリプト全体を見ながら、再度英語を聞いて確認することも重要ですよ。

Chandler: Ooh, Lambchop. How old is that sock? If I had a sock on my hand for thirty years __①__ too.
Ross: Okay. I think it's time to change somebody's nicotine patch.
Monica: Hey. Where's Joey?
Chandler: Joey ate my last __②__, so I killed him. Do you think that was wrong?

Ross: Hey Pheebs, you gonna have the rest of that Pop-Tart?.. Pheebs?

Phoebe: Sorry. ..you know, those stupid soda people gave me seven thousand dollars for the thumb.
All: You're kidding. Oh my God.
Phoebe: And on my way over here, __⑤__. ...What is up with the universe?!
Joey: What's going on?
Monica: Nothing. I just think it's nice when we're all here together.
Joey: Even nicer __⑥__.
Rachel: Uh, Joey..
Joey: Oh, God!
Monica: Okay.
All: Oh! That was Lambchop!
Monica: Please, guys, we have to talk.
Phoebe: Wait, wait, I'm getting a deja vu...no, I'm not.
Monica: Alright, we have to talk.
Phoebe: There it is!
Monica: Okay. It's about Alan. There's something you should know. I mean, there's really no easy way to say this.. uh.. __⑦__.

(They all gasp and clutch each other.)

Ross: Is there somebody else?
Monica: No, no no no.. it's just.. __⑧__. People change.
Rachel: We didn't change..
Joey: So that's it? It's over? __⑨__?
Phoebe: You know.. you let your guard down, you start to really care about someone, and I just..
Monica: Look, I could go on pretending..
Joey: Okay!
Monica: but that wouldn't be fair to me, it wouldn't be fair to Alan. It wouldn't be fair to you!
Ross: Who wants fair? You know, I just want things back, y'know, the way they were.
Monica: I'm sorry..
Chandler: Oh, she's sorry! I feel better!
Rachel: I just can't believe this! I mean, with the holidays coming up, I wanted him to meet my family.
Monica: I'll meet somone else. __⑩__.
All: Oh, yeah! Right!
Monica: Are you guys gonna be okay?
Ross: Hey hey, we'll be fine. We're just gonna need a little time.
Monica: I understand.

Alan: Wow.
Monica: I'm, I'm really sorry.
Alan: Yeah, I'm sorry too. But, I gotta tell you, I am a little relieved.
Monica: Relieved?
Alan: Yeah, well, I had a great time with you.. I just can't stand your friends.

Rachel: Remember when we went to Central Park and rented boats? That was fun.
Ross: Yeah. He could row like a viking.
Monica: Hi.
All: Mmm.
Ross: So how'd it go?
Monica: Oh, you know..
Phoebe: Did he mention us?
Monica: He said he's really gonna miss you guys.
Ross: You had a rough day, huh? C'mere.
Chandler: That's it. I'm getting cigarettes.
All: No no no!
Chandler: I don't care, I don't care! Game's over! I'm weak! I've gotta smoke! I've gotta have the smoke!
Phoebe: If you never smoke again, I'll give you seven thousand dollars!
Chandler: Yeah, alright.

Vocabulary of the Day

Pop-Tart　アメリカのお菓子（上の写真を参照）

deja vu　デジャブ、既視体験、以前見たような感覚
gasp　ハッと息をのむ、驚きや恐怖であえぐ
clutch　しっかりとつかまる
pretend　～のふりをする、装う
relieved　ほっとしている
mention　～のことに触れる、話に出す

Just like thatの意味と使い方

Just like that は会話でよく使われるフレーズです。次のような意味があります。

使い方は、大抵の場合は、文の最後に付け加えたり、単独で使って疑問文のように使ったりします。

今回のFriendsの場面では、Joeyにとって、Monicaがいとも簡単にAlanと別れることを決めたように思えたので、

So that's it? It's over? Just like that?
（じゃ終わり？もうおしまい？そんなに簡単に？）

のように単独で疑問文のように使っていますね。会話では頻繁にこのような使い方をします。

他にも使い方を見ておきましょう。

He gave me a thousand dollars, just like that.
彼が1000ドルくれたよ。突然。
All the money was gone. Just like that.
お金が全部消えたよ。あっという間に。
You can't walk out on me just like that.
そんなに簡単に出ていかないでよ！
You can't quit your job just like that!
そんなに簡単に仕事をやめるなよ！

A: After she took the money on the table, she left.
　テーブルの上のお金を取ったら、彼女出てったよ。
B: Just like that?

A: Yeah, just like that. Never seen her ever since.
　うん、すぐ。それからずっと会ってない。

あとがき

今回は、Friends Season1 Episode3 "The One with the Thumb" からの映像でした。

Season1ですから皆若いですよね。映像も90年代そのものという感じです。そして出演者は皆私と同じ世代です。
